Photography has long been used to create a visual record of art works in other mediums. Famous sculptures are probably best known via photography, and two years ago, the MoMA in New York dedicated an entire exhibit to photography's role in documenting and preserving performance art.

During much of their heyday, Led Zeppelin skirted the star-maker media machine and conquered the planet via word-of-mouth and mystique. Earlier this year, Paul Hansen's shot of a funeral procession in Palestine was selected as the World Press Photo winner. Almost immediately, controversy sprang up online with people claiming that the image was "faked with Photoshop." Since then, things had calmed down a bit. The prize was not revoked and the image was never proven to be subject to excessive manipulation.

I took to calling 2012 the “Year of Photobooks Online,” what with the slew of photobook-related websites that popped up. This year, though, I’m hearing about more real-life photobook meetups, whether it’s on some online feed or from people I know in Tokyo. In any case, I’m not sure yet whether to call 2013 the “Year of Real-Life Photobook Events,” but 10x10 American Photobooks is certainly giving me a push in that direction.

With Neue Welt, Wolfgang Tillmans released one of the best books of last year. If you haven't already bought it, I can recommend it without reservation. Still, if you're looking to get an introduction to Tillmans' work, you would do well to download some of the PDFs that Tillmans has just uploaded to his website. There are seven files in total, and they provide an excellent survey of Tillmans' work to date.

Interview: Mitch Feinberg On His Boston Magazine Marathon Tribute Cover

When the Boston Marathon was attacked last month, the staff at Boston Magazine wanted to do something special to honor the victims and pay tribute to a city that had been thrown into chaos. They settled on the idea of collecting sneakers from runners in the race and telling their stories. All the sneakers would be collected into a single photograph and put on the cover of the magazine. They hired veteran still life photographer Mitch Feinberg to get the shot. This is the story behind that shot.

NASA's Cassini-Huygens probe has orbited Saturn since 2004. In terms of photographic output, it's a frequent stunner, due in no small part to its subject planet and its dramatic rings.

But today's release is especially alluring. For the first time, the craft has photographed a mysterious hurricane at the planet's north pole.
